Happy Valentine's Day!
As we approached Valentine's Day I thought this year it would be different. I had been seeing a new man. After our second date my hopes got a little out of control. Had I finally found someone?
Well, last weekend we were to have our third date. It turned out to be a date where everything goes wrong that could go wrong. I planned to take him to our Historical Museum....because he seemed really interested in that kind of thing. When we got there, he was obnoxious to the tour guide....acting like he knew everything about everything. It was kind of embarassing. Then I took him for a driving tour of one of our city parks. It use to be a farm and there is a road that goes through the woods.....he used to work on farms....I thought maybe this would interest him.....we stayed there long enough to drive through. So next we went out to dinner.
He ordered the special.....I ordered the chicken tenders....his meal was unsatisfactory....I didn't eat mine out of sympathy for him. I had mine boxed to take home....he didn't. We started a discussion of religious views...big mistake....we have entirely different beliefs! He got critical of Christianity and tel-evangleists.....one of my favorites, Joyce Meyers. I defended her. I heard him mutter under his breath...."I can't wait to get out of here!" I took that personal.....I told him my head cold was giving me a headache and could he just take me home. End of date? No, once we stopped in front of my apartment building he said to wait he had something for me in the trunk....he pulled out a grocery bag with a heart shaped box of candy! I hugged him and said thank you.....he pulled back. I said bye and walked into the building. End of date.
The next day I got an email saying that I was very welcome. That he thought I was someone who could be something in his life. I never answered and haven't heard from him since.
I ate the candy...threw away the tin it came in. I tossed the flowers from our first date. So Valentine's day wasn't one I looked forward to this year.
So....today came and it was our meeting day for Foster Grandparents. All the kids at school were bummed the day before when I told them I wouldn't be there for Valentine's Day. So I promised to come to their party after the meeting. The meeting was very interesting....and I learned a lot about diabetes....and Goodwill Industries. After the meeting I went to the school and I was walking in on the sidewalk and heard someone shouting, "Grandma Ruth!!" Turning to my right the side door of the library opened and there was all my students...jumping up and down...so excited to see me. They were almost out of control and each one had to give me a big hug. After library time we went back to the classroom for the party.....I got Valentines from everyone...a big chocolate bear, a mug, a stuffed bear, and lots of candy. That really cheered me up.
I came home with a smile on my face and decided to cook a dish for the community potluck. I never go to these things but had heard someone being critical of the lady in charge. So I decided that maybe I should show my support. As it turned out there wasn't even one empty seat in the community room....maybe others felt the same way as me. I had some delicious food and enjoyable conversation. So it turned out to be a good Valentine's Day after all.

Hi Everyone,
It's been a while since I last wrote. I am still working on my goals so that has been taking some of my time. Also, my computer crashed. The teacher I work with suggested her computer guy to help. He told me it would be $20. just to look at my computer. So I said ok. That night he called and said that he was running a test and it was coming out good. He called again and left a message that the test showed some bad sectors....and he needed my authority to run further tests. When I called back he said it would cost me an additional $30....so I thought it would be only $50...much cheaper than buying another computer, right?
Well, late that night he called again and told me that my hard drive was completely gone....a new hard drive would be about $100, to install a new operating system $80....so I quickly calculated it would be $230..so far....and not worth it since I had already checked prices for a new laptop at $350. I told him to just return my laptop.
The next day he dropped it off and insisted I pay him the $50. I kind of felt cheated...being that he didn't fix my computer but I didn't want to fight so I paid. (After all, how do I even know if he did anything?)
My friend, Bonnie, recommended another computer guy that had done work for her in the past. She was telling him how I am on limited income and work in the school as a foster grandma....he said, "Wait a minute, are we talking about Grandma Ruth at M_____ School?" Bonnie said yes....and he said, "tell her to let me have the computer and I will fix it for free! My daughter loves Grandma Ruth!" When Bonnie told me this it brought tears to my eyes. I didn't thing anyone even noticed me at school.
So he had it for a couple of days and called and told me that he was going to reformat the hard drive. He did and I have the computer back. It is working ok. I lost all my data and it seems maybe a little slower but it is still working. I gave him $20....even though he didn't ask for anything. He told me he didn't know how much longer it would last...so I know I should start saving up....and storing my data on a flash drive!
So in deciding to start watching for a new computer....do you have a desktop or a laptop? Which one do you like better? What operating system are you using? If you have Windows 8...is it hard to use? Do you like it?
Ok, that's it for today....tonight is my aquacise at the YMCA.....I was able to get a reduced membership for $13. a month.....so I am started with the water exercise and when I strengthen my legs then I will try the treadmill or exercise bike.

Just an update on my daughter's participation in the Disney World Marathon.
A total of 65,000 people participated.
She placed with a time for the marathon of 3:18....which is her new record. She came in 4th in her age group and 17th overall. She was mentioned in the Orlando Sentinel...

Happy Saturday everyone!

Are you chasing happiness? What brings pleasure to your every day life?
I woke up this morning and was about to turn on the television and slapped my hand and instead began working on my goal setting. Do you set goals? Do you write them down? If so, I would love to hear about your experience. Did it help you achieve your goals to actually write them out...to perhaps visualize them or actually find pictures to support the ideas you have inside?
My goals are in six categories...
Spiritual
Physical
Financial
Social
Attitude
Pleasure
I did some research on line for these....and actually in most articles it said to not share your goals with others. So I won't share the individual goals but just the idea of my new endeavor.
Hopefully these won't be like New Year's resolutions...which I purposely didn't do because all my past new year's resolutions failed.
On another note. My daughter, Arlene, is competing this weekend at Disney World. She will win 3 medals and has already been given three t-shirts. This morning she ran a half marathon and tomorrow she will run a full marathon. She is in the first wave...I think she said her number is 146...hoping she does well. Thirty nine miles in one weekend is totally mind-boggling to me!!! Good luck to Arlene! Next she will begin training for the qualifying triathlon for the Olympics...where she gets all this energy is beyond me.

The Toledo Zoo
Sunday evening my two friends came and picked me up and took me to the Toledo Zoo Lights before Christmas. It was wonderful! Above is a picture of a very large tree. It could be seen from almost anywhere in the zoo. I forget the number of lights in it but altogether in the whole zoo there was over 70 miles of Christmas lights strung. Of course we did get a chance to see a few of the zoo animals. Most were hiding in the dark, I think. I saw a snow leopard licking up some water.....and some Siberian Tigers sleeping, some penguins standing like statues and some elephants pacing... All in all it was a very nice night to walk the zoo...temps in the 50's. Very unusual weather for Michigan. We are still without snow...will we get any before Christmas?
Next week by this time I will be in Florida visiting my daughter and her family....so maybe I won't see snow until January.

Hi everyone,
Today was 12-12-12.....did you realize we won't see another one like this. The next one will be in 100 years.
When I was raising my children I never thought about a lot of things. Now that I work in a school I sometimes think that I missed the boat with my children. I never made sure that their homework was done. Yes, even in first grade there is homework. And believe me, it really makes a difference in the ones who do it and the ones who don't. In our classroom the ones who do their reading each night and have their parents sign a slip, get a shiny star to put on their chart....plus a small piece of candy. After they accumulate 10 stars they get a trip to the prize basket and get to chose a small prize. My heart goes out to those who show up day after day with no signed slip. Of course the teacher eventually talks to the parents, but by then the child is behind in their reading skills. Then there are the children who show up at school with uncombed hair, no mittens and no hats. What are the parents thinking?
My teacher is a gem. She has a whole box of mittens and gloves. She has a lady that knits hats and she makes sure each child has a hat to keep them warm at recess. And she also collects boots and has them on hand. Today on her lunch hour she went to the Dollar Tree and bought hair brushes and pony tail holders....there were three girls who show up every day with wild hair....now they have a hair brush to keep in their lockers! I love the teacher I work with.
Well, I need to get busy and finish my daughter's Christmas present. Have a nice evening.

Greetings!
Hello everyone!!
Sorry I haven't written a blog for a while. Just nothing much to write about. My days are pretty boring.....going to help out at the school in the mornings and coming home to nap and then the evenings to watch tv or work on some craft.
I have been working on an afghan for my daughter in Florida for Christmas. I don't know if she even needs it since it is mostly warm there, but I thought sometimes the air conditioning can get cold when she is lounging on her sofa (maybe she does that) and she could just throw it over herself.
She has invited me to travel to Florida for the Christmas break and I am torn as to what I should do. I would need to stay for the whole 16 days. Sometimes after being away for just a while I am ready to go home. I don't have a lot of money for sight-seeing although I wish I did. However, if I stay home I will be bored out of my mind. Nothing to make me get up in the mornings....quietness all day long in my small apartment.....since my friends will be celebrating the season with their families. So what to do? Any suggestions?
I haven't even decorated for Christmas....I am just the Christmas scrooge this year. I did do a tiny amount of gift buying (what my pocket book would allow). Those gifts are wrapped and in a Santa bag in the corner of the living room.
Today we had a few snowflakes and it brought cheers from all the first graders.....oh to be young and excited like that again!
